This April, YCAT is proud to launch the fifth year of its annual Musicians’ Mental Health Month, working in partnership with the Musicians' Union, the British Association for Performing Arts Medicine (BAPAM), Tonic Music and, for the first time, the Royal Society of Musicians (RSM).

This year’s theme is imposter syndrome: the feeling of self-doubt and a fear of being “found out”, even when there is clear evidence of your achievements. It’s something many musicians experience, often silently.

As part of this year’s campaign, YCAT is offering a range of free support for musicians, including:

Together, these opportunities aim to create space for reflection, support, and practical next steps. Whether you’re currently struggling with imposter syndrome, other issues, or simply looking to better understand your own experiences.

Dr Kate Blackstone, Project Manager at YCAT, says:

Dr. Kate Blackstone

"Over the last five years of our Musicians' Mental Health Month, I've seen musicians become more and more open about discussing the challenges of a career in the industry. However, research continues to suggest that students and early career musicians are unsure of where to turn for support, which is why we're proud to be able to offer one-to-one sessions, free of charge, alongside signposting to expert partners."

Our partners continue to play a vital role in supporting musicians’ health and wellbeing. The Musicians' Union offers a wide range of support, from advice on contracts, pay and working rights to resources on managing wellbeing, burnout and stress, as well as advocacy in challenging situations, helping to create the conditions for sustainable careers in music.

The British Association for Performing Arts Medicine (BAPAM) provides specialist healthcare for performers, while Tonic Music offers tailored mental health support for the music industry. We are also delighted to welcome the Royal Society of Musicians as a new partner this year who, together with BAPAM, are running a free webinar focussed on Self-esteem, Self-doubt and Imposter Syndrome (27 May 2026), exploring how these challenges show up for musicians and offering practical strategies to build confidence.

“We are delighted to partner with YCAT for this year’s Musicians’ Mental Health Month. It is vital early-career musicians know how to access the support that is out there for them, to ensure they can have long and fruitful careers. We are ready to provide financial aid, advice and guidance to those in need and ensure the continued health of our profession.”

Musicians’ Mental Health Month will run throughout April, with content, resources, and opportunities shared across our website and social channels.
