Hailed as “Australia’s most exciting young cellist” by Limelight magazine, James Morley works largely as a soloist and chamber musician, and frequently extends into experimental improvisation, electronics and post-instrumental performance. He is is currently studying a Performance Masters under Nicolas Altstaedt at the Hochschule für Musik “Hanns Eisler” Berlin, having previously completed a Masters of Contemporary Music Performance at the Musik-Akademie Basel, tutored by Marcus Weiss, Yaron Deutsch, Sarah Maria Sun & Mike Svoboda.

A winner at the 2024 YCAT International live auditions, he has performed at venues such as Sydney Opera House Utzon Room, Festival dei Due Mondi Spoleto, Spreehalle Berlin and performed a combination of solo and chamber works with the Manchester Collective at Wigmore Hall directed by Duncan Ward. 2025/26 sees a busy period worldwide for James, with performances at Wigmore Hall, Leeds International Concert Series, Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and Berlin Konzerthaus interspersed with a residency with UKARIA in his native Australia.

James is a specialist in contemporary music performance, and has had the pleasure of closely collaborating with many composers and performers. Endlessly fascinated in experimental improvisation, James released a record (postauto) in 2024 as Helen + James with bassist/vocalist Helen Svoboda. He has also premiered solo works by Liza Lim, Josephine Macken and Ivan Liuzzo, ensemble works by Bernhard Lang, Stefan Prins and Elnaz Seyedi, and orchestral works by Thomas Adès.

James plays the 'Ex-Robert Barrett' cello made in 2004 by Rainer Beilharz, kindly on loan from Professor Mitra Guha, in memory of her late husband.
